Rev. Msgr. Thomas R. Kelly, M.A., M.S., P.D., Pastor
Monsignor Kelly is a native of the south Bronx and the son of immigrant parents. He attended St. Luke’s Grammar School, Cathedral Prep and College, St. Joseph’s Seminary, and both Fordham’s and St. John’s University Graduate Schools. He was ordained a priest in 1967 by Francis Cardinal Spellman (RIP). Father has served the people of the Archdiocese as a parochial vicar (3 years), high school teacher (12 years), high school principal (12 years) and, before arriving at this parish in 2008, as pastor of St. Gabriel’s in the Bronx (12 years).

Rev. Msgr. Walter F. Kenny, M.A., M.S., S.T.D., Pastor Emeritus
Monsignor Kenny was pastor of St. Augustine Parish for twenty-one years. Monsignor Kenny attended St. Joseph’s Grammar School in Harlem. He went to Cathedral Prep and College and then to St. Joseph’s Seminary, Dunwoodie. He was ordained May 14, 1954 by Cardinal Spellman. He was then sent to the North American College in Rome and received a doctorate in theology from the Gregorian University in 1957. He was an assistant at St. Josephs Church, Yonkers for four years. There he was in the Chancery Office for twenty-five years, mostly in the Tribunal where he became the Judicial Vicar for both the New York Tribunal and the Archdiocesan Appeals Court. For years he was Director of Priest-Personnel. He was appointed Pastor of St. Augustine in 1956. During his tenor, the sanctuary was renovated, a bathroom added in the sacristy, the Church was air conditioned, the plaza was enlarged, and a new console was installed for the organ and a St. Augustine Statue was placed over the Cherry Avenue entrance. He retired in 2007 and has stayed to help out.

Father Paul Waddell
Father Paul Waddell Was Born And Raised In The Bronx And Grew Up In St. Theresa’s Parish. After Graduating From St. Theresa’s Grammar School, He Attended St. Raymond\’S High School For Boys. Then He Studied In The Teacher Preparation Program At Manhattan College, Graduating With A BA In 1980. Father Paul Was Ordained By John Cardinal O’Connor On December 01, 1984. He Has Served In A Variety Of Parishes Over The Course Of His Priesthood As A Parochial Vicar: Including, St. Frances De Chantal, Bronx, St. Clare’s, Staten Island, And St. Mary Of The Assumption, Katonah. Father Paul Most Recently Served At St. Joseph’s, Bronxville And Immaculate Conception, Tuckahoe As Well As St. Clare’s, Bronx. Her Also Has Served As Chaplain At The Montfort Academy And Kennedy Catholic High School.
Father John Awiti
Effah Awiti John Yaw is the full name of Father John Awiti who is an international priest from Ghana. He was ordained a priest in 1996 and has studied youth ministry and catechetics at the Salesian Pontifical University in Rome, between 1999 and 2002.
Deacon Robert M. Gontcharuk, MA, MS, MRE
Born in the East Village, NYC, Deacon Bob graduated from Power Memorial Academy. He joined the Congregation of Christian Brothers (C.F.C.) in 1965 and was a member of the Community for 20 years. He holds graduate degrees from Iona College, Immaculate Conception Seminary and Fordham University. As a Brother, he taught at elementary, secondary and college levels as well as being part of the Formation team. He worked various positions at Con Ed from 1985 – 1997. In 1989, Deacon married Louise and they currently live in New Rochelle.
In 1993, Cardinal John O’Connor ordained Deacon for the Archdiocese of N Y and assigned him to Holy Name of Jesus Parish in New Rochelle. He has taught in the NY Catholic Bible School from 1999 to 2015. Currently he is Director of Catholic Identity for the Central Westchester Regional Schools and lectures in the Diaconate Formation Program at St. Joseph’s Seminary. He is also a current member of the Ethics Committee at Montefiore Hospital in New Rochelle.
Sister Suzanne Duzen, SS.C.M., M.Ed., M.S., Director of Religious Education
Sister Suzanne is a member of the Congregation of the Sisters of Saints Cyril and Methodius whose motherhouse is in Danville, PA. She taught for 14 years in Catholic elementary schools in CT, NJ and SC. For the next 20 years she was a Catholic school principal in Harrisburg, PA. In the last 3 years she served in various roles of leadership in her congregation. She is a puppeteer, director of children’s theater and has organized various events and groups for the cause of peace and social justice with youth and adults.

Lu A. Doyle, M.A., M.S., Director of Adult Faith Formation
Lu Doyle is a certified Director of AFF in the Archdiocese of New York. She was a Director of Religious Education in our Archdiocese for nine years after receiving her Master’s from Fordham’s Department of Religion and Religious Education. In a previous career, Lu taught ESL and pedagogy at the university level in Italy and the U.S.

Sister Muriel Cooney, O.P., M.S., A.P.D., Pastoral Associate for Special Ministries
Sister Muriel is a member of the Congregation of the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill. She is a graduate of St. Helena High School and Fordham University (graduate degrees in Religious Education and Pastoral Counseling) and is certified in Spiritual Direction and Bereavement Counseling. Sister has taught in elementary schools in New York and Missouri and has served as a Pastoral Associate at St. Ignatius Mission located on the Flathead Indian Reservation, Montana, and Holy Innocents Parish, Pleasantville, N.Y. Recently she served as a member of the Leadership Council of her Community.

Michael P. Ward, Music Director
Michael Ward’s hymns, including In the Breaking of the Bread, Here I Am, Lord (I Come to Do Your Will), I Saw Water Flowing, and A New Commandment, are published by World Library Publications and J.S. Paluch’s Monthly Missalette. He was director of music at St. Francis Xavier in Manhattan, St. Frances de Chantal and St. Theresa’s in the Bronx. He has composed the music for several Broadway, Off-Broadway, and regional theater productions, and received a Drama Desk Award nomination for the additional music he composed for Broadway’s Angels in America.

Anne Avenius, Grounds Supervisor, Sacristan & Head Usher
Anne was born and raised in the Bronx at St. Helena’s parish. An education major, she ended up in construction management and returned to night school to learn the trade. Anne worked for over forty years in the field, acting as Senior Project Manager on many major projects: the St. Regis Hotel, the Home Box Office HQ on 42nd St. and the General Mail Facility on 28th, among others. Since moving to Westchester, she has been very active at the parish of St. Augustine as a volunteer as well as a staff member. Semi-retired from the construction industry, she continues to do consulting work as well as overseeing our parish maintenance. Anne also acts as head usher and sacristan every Sunday.
Elizabeth B. Pirinea, Bookkeeper & Insurance Administrator
Elizabeth Pirinea has worked at our parish since 2007 and, concurrently, at St. Pius X in Scarsdale, where she started in 2005. Before balancing parish books, Elizabeth was a financial officer and office manager for many years at a large real estate firm in Stamford, CT and also spent a number of years working in a brokerage business. A native of New York City, she lives in Pelham Bay with her son, Christian.
Elizabeth H. King, Administrative Assistant for Religious Education Office
A Bachelor’s in Business Administration and an interest in religion have made Liz King an asset at three Larchmont houses of worship in the last 30 years: Larchmont Temple, Larchmont Avenue Church, and now at her spiritual home as a Catholic, the parish of St. Augustine. As a resident of Larchmont for 33 years, she contributed to the community in other capacities as well. She was a Chatsworth PTA Class Parent for 14 years, a Campfire Girls troop leader, and a member of the Board of Elections for ten years. Liz has three children and four grandchildren, and in 2011 she welcomed her fourth great-grandchild.
Ann Betkowski, Office Manager
Ann Betkowski is a graduate of Villanova University and a granddaughter of long time parishioners Alice and Joe Vandernoot. Ann worked for several years in food service and in baseball; she was also Vice President of a non-profit wellness organization in Maryland, Healthy U Delmarva and managed sales systems for a fleet management GPS company. Ann has been at St. Augustine since February of 2011 and graduated with a Masters in Church Management from Villanova Business School in 2018.
